Preface for the special issue with selected papers of the 10th International Workshop on Optimization and Inverse Problems in Electromagnetism (OIPE 2008)

Article Type: Guest editorial From: COMPEL: The International Journal for Computation and Mathematics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Volume 28, Issue 5

This issue contains a selection of 22 papers of the 10th International Workshop on Optimization and Inverse Problems in Electromagnetism (OIPE 2008).

The International Workshops on Optimization and Inverse Problems in Electromagnetism have gained a high reputation over the last two decades. We are glad that the 10th Anniversary of the Workshop Series was held in Ilmenau in September 2008 and, at the same time, for the first time in Germany. Altogether, 142 participants from 31 countries around the world contributed 101 presentations to the OIPE 2008. Out of the 68 full papers submitted after the conference, 22 were chosen after the review process for this special issue of COMPEL: The International Journal for Computation and Mathematics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The common denominators of all OIPE workshops, optimization and inverse problems, are cross-sectional topics with high relevance in many fields of engineering, biomedical and other sciences. Thus, the OIPE workshops are very multidisciplinary with respect to the covered topics and the contributing scientists. This is in contrast to many other workshops or conferences, which concentrate on specific applications or subfields of science. It not only makes the OIPE series unique but also brings together and promotes interaction between scientists from various backgrounds and from all around the world. We are convinced that the OIPE 2008 will substantially contribute to the exchange of new ideas and views in this field.

The OIPE 2008 was also included in the 3rd International Summer School in Biomedical Engineering, which was entitled “Reconstruction of sources of physiological signals” in the year 2008. In this Summer School, leading international experts taught PhD students, advanced Master students or researchers entering the field on a specific inverse problem: the reconstruction of bioelectromagnetic sources. Source reconstruction is the key to understanding how the brain works on a millisecond scale and is used in areas like cognitive research, as well as in various clinical applications. A twofold interaction was seen with the OIPE 2008: on one side, a broadened view of the Summer School participants through the OIPE workshop, and on the other side, new views from young researchers for the OIPE community. We are very happy that four summer school participants contributed to papers in this issue.

Research in optimization and inverse problems has a long tradition at the Ilmenau University of Technology. Already in the early 1960s, interdisciplinary teams from the mathematical and engineering faculties joined forces to develop new methods for non-linear optimization, vector optimization, and optimal control of dynamic systems and apply these methods to engineering applications. Recently, many of the key aspects of research at the Ilmenau University of Technology build on this long standing tradition.

We would like to thank the numerous people who made the OIPE 2008 and this special issue possible. First, we thank the International Steering Committee, the Editorial Board, the young investigator award committee, and the invited speakers. We are most grateful to all of our local staff and students who provided outstanding support. Special thanks go to Marek Ziolkowski.

The order of the papers in this special issue reflects the subject categories in the conference itself. The first four papers are in the area of “Evolutionary Computing”; papers five to seven are in “Multiobjective Optimization”; papers eight to 19 are in “Optimal Design”; and finally the last three papers are in the area of “Non-destructive Evaluation”.

Looking forward meeting you at OIPE 2010 in Sofia.

Ilmenau, 31 March 2009.
