Dynamix Technology Ltd have announced the availability of the new standard IPC-4101 Specifications for Base Materials for Rigid and Multilayer Printed Boards. The standard covers the requirements for base materials (laminate or prepreg) to be used primarily for rigid or multilayer printed boards for electrical and electronic circuits.

The widely used MIL-S-13949 will now be cancelled. The Defence Standardisation Program Office plans to adopt IPC-4101 as the document to use for laminate or prepreg materials.

"IPC-4101 was originally created because IPC member companies recognised that MIL-S-13949 was outdated, and could not adequately address current and future laminate procurement," says David Bergman, IPC vice president of technical programmes. "With the adoption of IPC-4101, the DoD is saving laminate companies money because these companies will not have to maintain dual inventories; both a military and a commercial grade."

With the elimination of MIL-S-13949, IPC-4101 and IPC-L-125 Specification for Plastic Substrates, Clad or Unclad, for High Speed/High Frequency Interconnections will be able to meet all the base material needs of the printed circuit board fabrication industry.

Some of the major changes made by IPC-4101 from MIL-S-13949 include:

  1. 1.

Prepregs and laminates on the same slash sheet.

  2. 2.

Slash sheets organised by families with open spaces for new materials which fit the family concept.

  3. 3.

The entire specification is in metric, with no imperial references.

  4. 4.

The latest test methods are attached to the document.

Doug Sober, of Isola, who worked on the IPC-4101 committee, says its release accomplishes the mission to develop an industry consensus standard which could be used by the military to recognise documented quality systems, incorporate SPC techniques and reduce costs for base materials.

IPC-4101 is available from Dynamix Technology at a cost of £56.00.

It also replaces IPC-L-108, IPC-L-109B, IPC-L-112A and IPC-L-115B.
