IPC committee addresses e-commerce

At a recent planning session, the IPC-newly formed E-Business and Supply Web Committee announced several initiatives designed to meet the needs of e-business companies and the printed wiring board (PWB) and assembly industries.

The first-of-its-kind committee brings together companies from all facets of the electronics and e-business industries and is chaired by Mehul Dave, president of Cimnet Systems. Gerry Haller, chairman of Fast Parts.com serves as the committee's vice chair. The committee also includes representatives from WebQuote.Com Inc., ezBOL.com, Partminer, Info-Elec, Circuit Technology Center, InterConexus.com and TheSupply.com

"There has been an incredible amount of information published on both e-commerce and the much broader issue of e-business. However, there has been very little work done to add structure and function to this explosive segment of the electronics industry. Our committee is dedicated to do this work", says Dave.

Dave says that the committee outlined several key industry-wide initiatives. These initiatives included the development of e-commerce best practices, a white paper exploring e-business myths, a technical/business roadmap and case histories.

The committee's best practices guideline expects to address such issues as open disclosure, conflict resolution, development of supplier rating criteria, quality measures and mission criticality (redundant systems).

"The committee is well aware of the incredible changes taking place in e-business. As a result, these programs are on a fast track to completion. You might say they are being worked on in cyber-time", says Dave.

Because of the diversity of companies and issues involved, IPC was the unifying force the industry needed to get the ball rolling on this project. "With the committee representing IPC members companies in both the PWB and electronics assembly industries and its longstanding history of standards development, IPC is uniquely qualified to facilitate the work of this committee", says Anthony Hilvers, IPC vice president of industry programs. "Although the committees' initial efforts might appear to center on e-commerce, or auction sites, the committee also recognizes the incredible power of e-business and its impact on the supply web."
