Ernie Jamieson – former head of Viasystems – is now chief executive of Signum Circuits, which is poised to expand into the Borders. The area was plunged into economic despair when Viasystems moved out of Selkirk and Galashiels to the northeast of England with the loss of 1,000 jobs.

They export specialised circuit boards for Internet communications to Europe, the USA and even Japan. Now Signum's move to the empty building in Selkirk is set to create 100 jobs in the unemployment blackspot.

Recently Jamieson stated: "We are still negotiating with the local enterprise company to complete a deal, so there is nothing finalised. But there is growth in our business and we need more floor space which in turn would provide more jobs". He added: "There is a good workforce in the Borders and we are very excited about being able to expand". A spokesman for Scottish Enterprise Borders welcomed Signum's planned expansion. He said: "It demonstrates the strength in depth of the electronics industry and particularly the printed circuit board side of electronics in the Borders. Things are looking very positive indeed".
