Awards for Excellence

A. J. Cobley Shipley Europe Ltd, Coventry, UK and

D. R. Gabe Loughborough University, Loughborough, UK

are the recipients of the Journal's Outstanding Paper Award for Excellence for their paper

"Methods for achieving high speed acid copper electroplating in the PCB industry"

which appeared in Circuit World Volume 27 Number 3, 2001

J. Cobley graduated with an honours degree in Applied Chemistry from Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1986 and after a short spell at the International Tin Research Institute, worked for British Aerospace in Stevenage.

In April 1989 he took a position at Shipley Europe in their Technical Service Department before joining the R & D team where he now holds the position of Senior R & D Chemist.

Three years ago he began a part time Ph.D at Loughborough University studying advanced methods of electroplating for the PCB industry, a programme which is sponsored by Shipley Europe.

He is a chartered chemist and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Professor David R. Gabe formerly with British Steel Corporation and Sheffield University, has led the Surface Engineering Research Group at Loughborough for over 20 years where the speciality has been process enhancement for electrodeposition, anodizing and related coating processes. Funded by industry, EPSRC, EU etc. the research has always been applications driven and the use of novel agitation methods for high-speed deposition has been a core activity.

He was the President of the Institute of Metal Finishing from 1995-7 and received the Scientific Achievement Award from the USA in 1996 for researches in high-speed electrodeposition.

The award winning paper results from present collaboration between the University and Shipley Co. in the field of electrodeposition from electronic applications.
