Anglia Circuits Limited has won gold in the International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice 2003. This is a global competition that rewards environmental best practice. It is open to international and national companies and government bodies (Plate 2).

Hosted by Patricia Hewitt, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry at the House of Commons, Anglia Circuits scooped gold in the Electrical and Electronics category against fierce competition.

Anglia Circuits has been manufacturing PCBs since 1968. They have built an enviable reputation for World Class quality, service and flexibility, supplying a wide range of PCBs to blue-chip companies in the UK.

Environmental Best Practice is viewed by progressive companies, such as Anglia Circuits, as a key business parameter. For a UK PCB manufacturer to succeed in the face of global competition, Anglia knows it must maximise the benefits of adopting sound environmental practices.

Anglia Circuits introduced an Environmental Management System in 1999. On initial assessment it was found that up to 91 per cent of all of the manufacturing consumables and materials used by Anglia could be recycled. Since then many initiatives have been introduced including staff training programmes, reduction of paper consumption, recycling of selected waste products such as aluminium, solder dross, carbide drills and tin anodes, and the improvement in effluent treatment and the reduction of water consumption.

Anglia operates within an industry that uses vast amounts of water, so a major project was undertaken to reduce the water consumption by a minimum of 15 per cent over 2 years. The project actually resulted in a 24.5 per cent reduction in water consumption and a 23.5 per cent increase in factory efficiency.

Anglia works positively with its customers and suppliers to try and influence their environmental practices and foster a "best practice" approach. It carries out rigorous vendor assessments and freely supports customers and suppliers with advice and recommendations.

As part of Anglia's continuous improvement policy, the team is working towards further reducing the environmental impact by studying the other aspects of waste minimisation and recycling.
