Purpose – discusses the reasons why virtual teams may not be as productive as teams that work together in more traditional ways. Advises on how to ensure that virtual teamworking is effective. Design/methodology/approach – quotes from team members who find working in virtual teams frustrating and inefficient to give a flavour of the problems that can arise. Describes how PriceWaterhouseCoopers US training operation uses virtual teams effectively, explaining the processes that are used to ensure that communication between team members is effective and that all team members contribute to their teams. Findings – argues that using the best and most up-to-date technology will not guarantee that virtual teams members work together effectively. Describes the types of procedures and processes that will ensure that communication between team members is good, that there are high levels of trust within the team and that everyone contributes to achieving the team’s goals. Practical implications – advises on making virtual teams productive.
