Purpose – to describe, very briefly, how one local authority organization, Swindon Borough Council, implemented a leadership training program in order to enable leaders to carry through an organizational change program. Design/methodology/approach – provides a very short profile of the organization and outlines how and why the Leadership Academy was developed for the council’s top 200 managers, and how it was implemented in a very short timeframe (the project started in May and finished in December 2004). Mentions the fact that the Council has moved up a level (from “poor” to “weak”) in its evaluation by the Audit Commission, and that “there is a buzz” in the organization that is “different”. Provides a bullet-pointed, ten-step guide to implementing a leadership program; offers a short soundbite from the leader of the project (the HR manager) on what she learned from it; and quotes the perspective of a satisfied participant (the director of commercial services). Originality/value – gives a snapshot of an organization that has successfully implemented a leadership training program.Style: ViewpointISSN: 0959-5848Reference: 35AA025
