Purpose – Explains how three firms that operate in the USA handle leadership training and development. Design/methodology/approach – Profiles the approach taken to leadership development by IKEA, Advanced Micro Devices and Children’s Healthcare of America. Indicates which employees are selected for leadership training and development, the content of the training and how it is delivered. An inset sets out the characteristics of effective leadership development programmes. Findings – Highlights the mix of special events and long-term management in the leadership development programmes that are used by the three companies.
