Fuelling the fire (BP leadership programme)

Priestland A., Hanig R.People Management, 23 February 2006, Vol. 12 No. 4, No. of pages: 3

Purpose – Explains the leadership development programme that BP offers its front-line staff. Design/methodology/approach – Describes why the training and development was needed, how the training was developed and how it is delivered. The authors describe their role in developing the leadership programme and how they worked with learning and development professionals in BP’s regions as part of this process. Findings – Reports that the $1.5 million investment made by BP in the development of the leadership programme has paid off because it is a model for the company’s other internal development initiatives and because the programme has enabled the company to save $1 million annually on the training courses it replaced. Originality/value – Notes that BP senior executives deliver much of the content of the training along with local and central trainers and argues that this has made the organization more cohesive.ISSN: 1358-6297Reference: 35AG817
