Purpose – Sets out the ideas that underpin a team coaching program and describes how these can be applied in practice. Design/methodology/approach – Sets out the characteristics of a healthy team, describing how emotions, such as fear of failure, can prevent people from contributing effectively to a team. Discusses how coaching can enable team members to manage their emotional blocks, outlining the coaching methods that can be used. Findings – Argues that teams are social units that rely on team members having a good rapport, being willing to be flexible and being in a good emotional state. Contends that coaching will enable team members to manage their emotions and communicate effectively with each other, laying the groundwork for learning and improved performance.
