Purpose – to discuss how marketing is taught in the UK. Design/methodology/approach – outlines the face-to-face methods and the use of new technology. Findings – e-learning may help those in charge of training and development and prove its worth to the board in the form of log-ons and site starts but its real value is questionable, which is why management training at UK agency iris takes the form of one-to-one business coaching where each trainee has a mentor. Despite this, argues that there is a place for new technology as part of the mix. States that the Institute of Sales Promotion (ISP) offers courses through distance learning with materials available online and fortnightly online tests while the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) uses a mixture of face-to-face and online with deadlines imposed throughout the course and podcasting of evening lectures. Originality/value – explains that even traditional learning environments have left students to their own devices some of the time so a mixture of face-to-face and solo working is nothing new.ISSN: 0141-9285Reference: 35AP307
