The ultimate training machine (BMW)

Young J. Training Journal, June 2006, Viewpoint

Purpose – sets out the training programs and techniques used at BMW’s (car manufacturer) new Group Academy UK. Design/methodology/approach – quotes from Jeff Jennings, the manager of the BMW Group Academy UK, about why the new centre needed to be opened, the facilities it has, the apprenticeship and dealership training it offers, the use of distance learning and its integration in specific training programs, and the savings that this new approach has made for BMW. Findings – reports that the new centre cost £17m but that it is already saving the company £1m by retaining more people on the training program and over £5m across the group. Notes that courses include online training and distance learning as well as face-to-face training. Originality/value – highlights the success of BMW’s new training centre and the new approach to training it has introduced.
