Purpose – to examine how scenario-based learning techniques can help individuals learn or unlearn behaviors. Design/methodology/approach – draws attention to how bullying has become endemic in UK workplaces; provides examples of bullying behavior; highlights the detrimental effects that bullying can have on workplace learning. Identifies the sources of bullying in organizations; briefly explores the theoretical importance of experience in facilitating adult learning and outlines the negative impact that bullying can have on the reflection of experience. Discusses the impact on learning of denial (explicitly or implicitly); looks at how scenarios can help overcome bullying behavior and recommends scenarios as a development strategy for unblocking denial and to enable effective learning by both the individual and the organization; illustrates with examples of possible scenario-based learning and how organizations can recover from a breakdown.
