Purpose – discusses how US companies can identify the employees who have the potential to become managers and organizational leaders and how to develop this potential. Design/methodology/approach – quotes from US commentators who believe that high performers may not be the people who have the highest potential to become organizational leaders. Also quotes commentators who believe that organizations should include diversity targets when recruiting to their leadership development programs. Advises on what activities to include in the program, citing the example of a number of firms’ development programs, including those of General Electric and Bose Corporation. Findings – underlines the need to target women and people from black and ethnic minorities when identifying who should be offered leadership development opportunities, cautioning that people with the talents to become good organizational leaders exist beyond the group of high performing employees. In relation to the actual program, highlights the need to include opportunities for networking as well as more traditional leadership development activities. Practical implications – advises on how to develop future organizational leaders. Originality/value – offers practical advice illustrated with the experience of US companies.ISSN: 0095-5892
