Purpose Interviews David Walker, head of the European Union’s new training centre that has been set up to provide leadership and management development training to its staff, about the role that the centre will play and how this will be carried out. Design/methodology/approach Quotes direct from the interview, which covered topics such as why the European Union has set up an administrative training centre, the skills that will be taught and how these will be assessed. Discusses how the centre will improve the administration of the various institutions within the European Union. Findings Highlights that the inter-institutional training will guarantee the quality of training for staff, will enable people from the different institutions to work better with each other, will promote common values and will provide economies of scale. Notes that the training will cover a mix of analytical, management and soft skills, which will be rigorously assessed. Originality/value Describes the approach being taken by the European Union to leadership and management training.ISSN: 1465-6523Reference: 36BA305
