Purpose – examines the benefits that can be gained by small businesses from hiring consultants and mentors. Design/methodology/approach – reports on how having a mentor has become a must for business leaders; draws attention to the huge proliferation in business consultancies and coaching organizations in New Zealand. Looks at how companies can make their partnership with a mentor/consultant/coach a success; provides examples and quotes both mentors and those that have been mentored on what makes for an effective team. Identifies some of the benefits that have been gained for the companies and highlights how with economic uncertainty, support and advice has become even more important. Examines how consultants can help with the thorny succession issue and how they can make up for some of the business and financial inadequacies of those running businesses. Outlines the services provided by some of the coaching and mentoring agencies; and features how Christchurch-based company Orlova South mentoring and coaching agency started.
