Purpose – Discusses practices and competencies for incorporating diversity within succession planning and identifies methods for developing women and minorities as successors for key positions. Design/methodology/approach – Discusses the literature on diversity and succession planning and describes the data source of interviews with 27 HR professionals from 25 different organisations. Discusses the integration of strategy and planning, leadership and critical planning practices and systematic approaches to development and mentorship competencies. Addresses the programme management issues of: reward systems; confidentiality and transparency; and measurement and evaluation. Findings – Shows that the development of organisational competencies in diverse succession planning requires a clear understanding of the business strategy and communication of how the process will provide a source of competitive advantage.Practical implications – Provides a table containing suggestions for diverse succession planning.
