Purpose – Identifies seven reasons why e-learning courses fail to achieve their objectives. Design/methodology/approach – Argues that even well-designed e-learning courses will fail if trainers commit some basic errors in the ways that they distribute and manage the training. Identifies seven of these and discusses what to do to avoid them. Findings – Lists the following mistakes – sending out a notification that the e-learning course is available and relying on the recipients to access it; not assessing the learning achieved; not ensuring that learners have performance support systems and job aids to enable them to go back to certain topics when needed; ignoring how the course works with the organization’s learning management system; not ensuring people can access the course easily; and ignoring workstation configurations. Underlines the need to address these issues before the e-learning course is released. Practical implications – Offers practical advice. Originality/value – Discusses how to improve e-learning courses. ISSN: 1535-7740 Reference: 38AF373
