Taking advantage

www.edvantagegroup.co.uk

The group acquired the successful e-learning company Futuremedia and appears to have continued its good (and award-winning) work. Edvantage provides solutions to help organizations implement effective learning programmes. They develop e-learning systems and software, provide over 10,000 online training courses, and have their own team of teaching experts creating customised e-learning content. Working side-by-side with clients, Edvantage group emphasises service and support to ensure that e-learning is successfully integrated into the organization. They are one of the largest companies in Europe solely focused on e-learning and have established partnerships with over 40 e-learning content providers, universities, and IT training organizations.

We did not like the home page much – too garish but the site is easy to navigate and they have an impressive client list. Well worth a visit.

Bright future?

www.saffroninteractive.com

“There’s a lot of ‘e-telling’ out there, masquerading as e-learning. We’re not interested in adding to that.” So opens an early paragraph on the Saffron Interactive site. They are experienced European providers of online and mobile training who specialise in creating bespoke e-learning, training solutions and business communications. Not one of the biggest players they do however seem to have a nice “personal touch”. Clients include Microsoft, BT, KPMG and Hilton International all of whom offer testimonials.

The site is fast and clean, well-designed and easy to use. No-frills but a nice easy-on-the-eye layout. We are not sure about the bright orange background – but with a name like Saffron we guess it is obligatory.

Across the world

Worldwidelearn.com

This site and company provides e-learning opportunities for a variety of careers. It acts as a gateway to courses, tutorials, classes, degrees and workshops from around the world that are offered entirely online and available to adult learners worldwide. Not all are free though.

This site offers online courses in as many as 40 varied subject topics from copy writing, e-commerce, accounting to Linux training, personal development, photography and more. The site also offers online MBA programs, degree programs and college courses.

The site is nice and clean with good links, interesting articles and an entertaining blog. It is a little US-centric given its title however.

Monkey business

www.webmonkey.com

This site comes from the stable of the well-known search engine Lycos. Webmonkey is a boon for web developers. Whether you are just starting out to build your own site or are a professional webmaster, you just cannot give this site a miss. With hundreds of articles across categories like Web Authoring, Design, Multimedia, E-business, Programming, etc, you will find tutorials, tips and advice for designing and building websites and programming web applications. There are articles for beginners, professionals, students, grandparents, bloggers and programmers of all skill levels. Even if you are only remotely interested in IT or the internet, you will not be disappointed if you visit this site.

Finding learning

www.findtutorials.com

FindTutorials.com is a web index and search engine that searches for tutorials and online courses on the web. It features a huge categorized database (700 categories, about 4,000 tutorials). FindTutorials.com allows you to search for free tutorials on practically any subject, ranging from photography to gardening to psychology. The site claims to guide you directly to written, certified tutorials carefully selected from all over the web.

In practice it is much better in some areas than others. Some business-related searches threw up little or no content, others, especially IT-related ones had more than you could wish for. Worth checking out but not the be-all-and-end-all it claims.

And finally

If you are planning for a year, sow rice;

if you are planning for a decade, plant trees;

if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.

Chinese proverb quoted on the worldwide learn site (see above)
