Purpose – Highlights the value of informal mentoring and describes how it can be supported. Design/methodology/approach – Discusses the nature of informal mentoring, setting out the differences between it and formal mentoring. Explains the settings in which it occurs - between peers, in groups and between employees and senior managers. Sets out an action plan for developing informal mentoring within an organization. Findings – Points out that most employees find it difficult to set up mentoring relationships and underlines the organization’s role in helping them to develop these. Argues that organizations need to set up mechanisms that will support informal mentoring and underlines the important role that trainers and learning professionals to play in this.
