Purpose – Looks at the current place that Hispanic workers hold in the US workforce and considers the training and development that are enabling them to get better jobs. Design/methodology/approach – Explains the programme developed by Florida Power & Light Co., to train local, mainly Hispanic people in response to skill shortages. Indicates demographic trends that mean that Hispanic people may have greater job opportunities in future and describes the education and training programmes that are being set up to ensure that they will have necessary skills to take advantage of these, including language training and training in supervision skills. Findings – Underlines that Hispanic people make up an increasing proportion of the US workforce and argues that employers should develop education and training schemes, in partnership with local colleges, to meet the needs of this group of employees or run the risk of manpower shortages. Originality/value – Highlights training programmes targeted at Hispanic people in response to changing US demographics. Article Type: Viewpoint ISSN: 1092-8332 Reference: 38AM747
