Purpose – Argues the case for greener supply chains. Design/methodology/approach – Suggests that carbon has become one of the key touchstones of supply chain management along with cost, service and quality – companies know that if they are successful in reducing their carbon emissions, they will strengthen their brand and achieve competitive advantage. Considers the need for companies to have an accurate assessment and measurement of their carbon emissions and to find innovative solutions to their carbon emission reduction targets. Describes the development of a fully sustainable partnership between biofuel producer Convert2Green and food wholesaler/distributor 3663, based on their commitment to creating a sustainable future, whereby Convert2Green collects the waste cooking oil and processes this oil into biofuel, which is returned to 3663 to power its delivery fleet. Reports that in the past two years Convert2Green has supplied over four million litres of biofuel to 3663, and that 3663 has saved 85 percent in its carbon emissions. Discusses the case of 3663 customer Leeds-based Nando’s restaurant which has recently become the first UK restaurant to use its own waste cooking oil to power the restaurant, and to export surplus electricity to the national grid.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 1466-836XReference: 39AC314
