Looks at the differences between professional service firms and other firms and discusses the implications of this for the career progression and learning preferences of professionals. Describes the ways in which professionals work, the career models that they tend to follow and how they approach training and development. Differentiates between those who have just started on their professional careers, those who have reached mid-level and are managers within their firm, those who are senior associates and those who are partners, discussing the extent to which they will need training in skills related to the profession, practice management, client skills and leadership. Discusses the design and delivery of training, listing the interventions that professionals dislike as well as those that they appreciate, including the value of e-learning and other types of technology-based training. Lastly considers how professional career development may change in the future.
