Purpose – Examines organizational development (OD) which has been enjoying a revival in the UK. Design/methodology/approach – Considers that OD is a specialism rather than a function and outlines its evolution from a response to the dehumanizing effects of scientific management practices through an increasing interest in organizational culture and employee engagement. Notes its basis in humanistic values. Discusses how OD practitioners are working with emergent change, which involves establishing a direction for change and working in a way that is responsive and adapts to changes in the real world. Looks at how OD and HR relate to one another. Provides one inset giving the personal perspective of an OD professional and a second on how to become an OD professional. Findings – Considers that OD preserves its integrity by working outside or at the boundaries of the system and prides itself on non-collusion. Originality/value – Reflects the latest thinking on OD.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 1358-6297Reference: 38AP486
