Purpose – Describes how a more diverse workforce will contribute to a firm’s ability to innovate. Design/methodology/approach – Reviews why firms may view diversity as a problem to be resolved rather then a resource for the organization. Sets out the business case for diversity, arguing that it should be perceived as part of the organization’s talent management strategy and a source of innovation. Discusses how firms can develop a more diverse workforce. Findings – Suggests that managers need to be re-educated about diversity and the contribution it can make to the business, and that organizations need to rethink how they source, identify and develop talent. Stresses that diversity best practice requires firms to stop focusing on the social-cultural background of their employees and to concentrate on their varied skills and different abilities instead. Originality/value – Links diversity management, talent management and innovation.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 1465-6523Reference: 38AX250
