Discusses the relationship between organizational needs and leadership development from the viewpoint of what it means to be a leader and how leadership principles can be applied in practice. Draws inspiration from Ancient Greece in general, and Socrates in particular, to provide a series of questions that may be used to form a means to enable managers to cultivate a strategic mind-set, including: what are the biggest challenges facing the organization; what are the biggest opportunities the organization can exploit; and what the manager can do to help the organization overcome the challenges and exploit the opportunities. Sets out other approaches based on the ideas of Socrates, including: teaching so others can follow; turning mistakes into lessons; insisting on the truth; noting that to reflect is to question the status quo; and gaining experience in time. Concludes that managers reflecting from time to time on their performance is in itself an act of leadership.
