Reports that, despite the current economic downturn and recession, there is still a continuing shortage of talented people to appoint to positions in accounting firms. Draws on recent survey results which indicate that, the current global and increasingly competitive market for skilled professionals, accountants remain among the top ten jobs most difficult to fill, while the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects continuing shortages of accountants due to expected faster than average growth in accounting employment (18-26 percent) through 2014, with the result that public accounting firms are finding themselves facing a future in which the ability to succeed in attracting and retaining highly skilled staff is essential not only to profitability but to their continued existence. Argues that firms must be able to assimilate and develop these employees, creating a desire to not only to stay but also to contribute to the firm’s success. Concludes that the key factors impacting a firm’s ability to attract and retain talented staff are its image and candidates’ initial impressions.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 0732-8435Reference: 39AX204
