AbstractLeadership can make or break an organization’s future, especially in turbulent times. Few strategic challenges are more compelling than identifying, developing and properly positioning the leaders of tomorrow. Successful organizations embed leadership responsibility at all levels, and invest heavily in leadership development. But many do not. A critical problem is the difficulty in determining how leadership development impacts, if at all, on business performance. Since this is often hard to ascertain, some companies avoid significant investment in leadership development altogether. Others drastically reduce it when times are hard. But even those who engage substantially in the challenge of developing leaders generally steer clear of measuring the link between their leadership development activities and business performance. In tough times, this is untenable. This article outlines five steps that enable organizations to develop robust measures of the relationship between their leadership development activities and business performance. The goal is to build greater direction, alignment and commitment, in pursuit of sustained competitive advantage. ISSN: 0090-2616 Article type: Research paper Reference: 41AJ762
