Improving safety performance

Organizations can improve their safety performance with Safety Auditing, the latest training package available from the UK Institution of Chemical Engineers.

The Safety Auditing package provides companies with all the technical and visual material needed to train potential auditors in how to evaluate safety management systems in a formal and structured way. This allows auditors to make recommendations for improvement and highlight future areas for concern. It also helps those being audited appreciate how the process improves safety performance.

The package includes case studies which focus on major accidents such as Bhopal, Seveso and Piper Alpha and highlight areas that a safety auditor should have noted. Safety Auditing also clearly describes the hidden costs of accidents, and how safety measures make good business sense.

Recognising the importance of a safety audit Dinesh Femando, head of product development SHE, at IChemE said, "With the imminent arrival of the new COMAH regulations, companies will be required to have a safety management system in place. IChemE's new training package helps companies train their staff to formally check that this system is working properly".

Safety Auditing provides trainers with:

  • information on the costs of accidents;

  • the benefits of safety auditing;

  • a step-by-step guide to the audit process;

  • case studies on past accidents and how a safety audit could have helped highlight the root causes.

The package includes over 100 colour slides and a CD-ROM of the slide presentations, so the trainer can select particular slides and customise presentations. Safety Auditing costs £350 and is available from John Duffy, SHE Department, IChemE, 165-189 Railway Terrace, Rugby CV21 3HQ, UK.
