Safir 3000: new generation thunderstorm forecasting with larger detection range

French company DIMENSIONS has la unched a new generation thunderstorm forecasting system: SAFIR 3000. SAFIR 3000 increases the maximum distance between measuring stations from 130km to over 200km. It is twice as accurate as previous models and three times as sensitive. It provides assistance risk prevention in storm situations.

The new generation SAFIR 3000 makes full use of digital electronics and signal processing technology. This provides enhanced performance and functions as regards accuracy, coverage, reliability, and remote control. It is compatible with modern means of communication while offering the best quality/price ratio on the market.

Thanks to SAFIR 3000's unique capacity for detecting all intra-cloud and cloud-to-ground discharges, it provides early-warning and nowcasting information as soon as the storm starts to develop. It also identifies areas that present a potential danger of lightning strikes, heavy rainfall, hail or downburst. Information is provided in real time on terminals adapted to the various uses, such as meteorology, aviation, hydrology, electricity supply, and dynamic lightning protection.

SAFIR's unequalled performance is the result of bringing together two technologies: VHF interferometry for detection and exact localisation of all lightning discharges, and low frequency analysis of the electromagnetic field to identify cloud-to-ground discharges. The system comprises a network of detection stations each consisting of VHF and LF sensors, a central processing station and a server to distribute information and data in real time to users.

SAFIR 3000 is a benchmark worldwide - it has just been chosen by the Japan Meteorological Agency for its national storm forecasting network, used in particular for ensuring aviation safety.
