Virtual Disaster Library from the Pan-American Health Organisation

This is the first edition of the Virtual Disaster Library (VDL) developed by PAHO in collaboration with the Regional Disaster Information Center (CRID), and the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR).

We would like to bring your attention to this product because of the special interest it will have as a technical information resource for all individuals and organisations related to disaster preparedness. This library contains:

  • more than 250 complete technical publications in English or Spanish on a variety of subjects related to preparedness, mitigation and response to disasters, specially in the health sector;

  • all the technical publications on disasters published by PAHO (in English, Spanish or French) from 1979 to January 1999;

  • the complete collection (from 1979 to 1999) in English and Spanish of the PAHO newsletter DISASTERS: Preparedness and Mitigation in the Americas;

  • a selection of documents from the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction and Costa Rica's National Emergency Commission.

The documents are organised by subject, by title or by organisation, but they can also be found by using a simple and powerful "search engine" and applying any word.

In addition to the CD-ROM version, it can be freely accessed through the Internet at no cost at the following Websites: http://www.paho.org/english/ped/pedhome.htm and http://www.disaster.info.desastres.net

We need your help in promoting and disseminating this collection. We would appreciate your referencing the VDL in your bulletin or magazine, and if you have a Website, creating a link to the Websites mentioned above.

We are attaching a more detailed description of the VDL but if you would like more information, please send an e-mail to disaster-publications@cdpaho.org or a fax to Ricardo Perez at (202) 775 4578, or regular mail to the Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief Coordination Program to: PAHO, 525 Twenty-Third Street, NW Washington, DC 20037-2895, USA.
