In an effort to apply the lessons from the 11 September 2001, World Trade Center collapse, the New York City Department of Buildings recently outlined the recommendations of a task force working to ensure the safety of occupants of tall buildings. The group concluded that, given the extent of damage, the ability of the structures to stand as long as they did and allow so many people to escape was remarkable. However, the task force members determined that it is possible to achieve higher levels of safety for high rise buildings. Recommendations include larger, sturdier, and more numerous stairwells; full sprinkler systems; and better protected ductwork.
