This page is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) comprehensive web portal for tsunami information and activities. The website includes sections on tsunami basics, warning, preparedness, hazards assessments, education, animations, and NOAA’s roles and responsibilities related to tsunamis. NOAA has primary responsibility for providing tsunami warnings in the USA and a leadership role in tsunami observations and research.

NOAA operates two tsunami warning centers – West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center and Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The home page of the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center provides the most recent press releases, advisories, watches, and warnings from the center; messages from and links to other warning centers around the Pacific; and links to earthquake catalogs, tsunami catalogs, and recent historical data on tsunamis. It also describes the Center and provides background information on the physics of tsunamis, tsunami safety, and the Great Alaskan Earthquake and Tsunami of 1964. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center website offers current bulletins (including estimated times of arrival and maps), as well as historical information concerning tsunamis of the region.

The NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory Tsunami Program, created to mitigate the tsunami hazards affecting the Pacific Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii, has been incorporated into the NCTR. The web page provides information on tsunami forecasting, research and modelling, events and data, and the Deep-Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) program.

The home page of the International Tsunami Information Center (ITIC) describes the work of the center and offers both current and historical information about tsunamis, as well as an online Post Tsunami Survey Field Guide. The related home page of the International Coordination Group for the Tsunami Warning System in the Pacific (ICG/ITSU) presents background information on tsunamis and tsunami warnings, a description of the Pacific Tsunami Warning System, and includes the ITIC Tsunami Newsletter.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has created a program to help cities, counties, and other local governments implement procedures to reduce the potential for weather-related disasters. By participating in StormReady, local agencies can earn recognition for their jurisdiction by meeting voluntary criteria established by the NWS in partnership with federal, state, and local emergency management professionals. TsunamiReady is part of the StormReady program and helps communities and counties at risk to tsunamis. This website includes information about how to apply for TsunamiReady status, tsunami publications, NWS contacts, and many links to further information.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) Western Region website offers information on tsunami research at the USGS, as well as basic background information, and online tsunami animations.

The Tsunami Risks Project, based in the UK, was launched to introduce the British insurance industry to tsunamis and the risks they pose and to quantify tsunami hazards be developing frequency-magnitude distributions and evaluations of direct and indirect insurance risks. The project is examining subjects ranging from how tsunamis are generated and how they propagate across the oceans, the mechanisms by which they cause damage when they make landfall, the means by which disaster planning can reduce the economic losses that result, to the sources of post-disaster information and mapping that can be consulted to validate tsunami-related insurance claims. The project’s website provides details about this initiative, as well as an interactive map with accompanying articles about historic tsunami disasters of the world, a “Risk Atlas” (another interactive map showing tsunami risk around the world), several complete publications, a bibliography, and an index of related websites.

Tsunami Risk Reduction for the United States: A Framework for Actionhttp://sdr.gov/

In 2005, the White House released its national tsunami risk reduction plan, Tsunami Risk Reduction for the United States: A Framework for Action. Authored by a working group of the President’s National Science and Technology Council in partnership with scientists and policy makers at local, state, and federal levels, it recognizes critical worldwide interdependencies, especially for Earth observations, and notes the opportunities for nations to work together to reduce vulnerabilities.

It was developed to explain the origins of the earthquake and ensuing tsunami and to document the damage they caused. It also includes slides on past tsunamis in the USA as well as a discussion of tsunami risk reduction methods.
