Direct grant schools at ministerial mercy

Abstract

Interviewed by The Times on 5 August, Reg. Prentice, speaking of the short time during which I was the Opposition Spokesman for Education, made the somewhat surprising comment that although he and I had had differences of emphasis ‘we had no clash of principle’. Now related to the short time I was doing the job that of course is perfectly true; but if the inference is that had I continued in the role we should not have had any such clashes, then it is certainly misleading. For example, in those early days of Labour Government no move had been made against the Direct Grant Schools. Had there been we should certainly have seen a clash of principle. Indeed with Labour policy in mind I had already, in one speech in the House of Commons, started to draw the battle lines.
