Abstract

A considerable number of articles have been published singing the praises of flexible working hours. This is not another of them. Nor is it one questioning the benefits. In offices we are rapidly reaching the situation where, despite the drawbacks of FWH (and there are some) not to be able to offer this type of working automatically reduces one's ability to recruit good staff. That is, the concept is rapidly catching on; staff like it, so, even if there is nothing in it for management one is bound to consider using it. Wisely then, many firms are asking their training officer to research and report on the idea. Where does one start? Reading the experience of others is a help. A list of articles, authors and publications is given at the end of this digest. There is also a brief paragraph on alternative flexibilities. At least one of the latter is considerably easier to operate and appears to have been highly successful in a large London office.
