Abstract

Radiation from VDUsThe problem VDUs emit low levels of radiation, and there was a scare in North America recently that this had been the cause of higher than usual incidences of miscarriages and birth defects among VDU operators. Some organisations took this sufficiently seriously as to make all female operators of child‐bearing age wear protective aprons. But our own Health and Safety Executive has concluded recently that there is no significant risk. A major research project has been launched in the US, however, so obviously the worry still persists. Television sets carry the same risk but only if you sit within four or five feet of them. The radiation is ineffective beyond this distance.
