Abstract

THE county library in Kent had been in existence for four years when the need for a change in the book‐box method of distribution became evident. There were then just under 200 centres and as the number of books issued to these centres steadily increased the actual manual labour of unpacking and reassembling the collections became too great. The danger was that the librarian would of necessity become merely a packer of boxes and a routine clerk.
