Abstract

I recall being in Port Moresby, capital of New Guinea, when a copra boat of around four hundred tons slowly entered the harbour, pushed along by a swarm of native canoes because the engine had petered out. The captain, it transpired, was in port to engage an engineer. He knew that it would be difficult to find the kind of experienced man he needed. His one hope would be in Tim Ryan's Hotel where the most intelligent beachcombers on the Coral Seas congregated when they had enough money to get a drink.
