The Plight of the Subject Bibliographer

Abstract

The compiler of a subject bibliography may, like Dr. Johnson's lexicographer, be no more than a harmless drudge, but his problems —if he is conscientious—are real enough, and they also bring into play wider issues of librarianship and scholarship.
