Encounter in Detroit
Abstract
Some years ago I had a strange encounter in Detroit. Stealing away for an evening from hospitable friends, I wandered to the river and sat down on a bench fronting the Ontario shore. Shortly I became aware of another man at the far‐end of the bench. In the gathering dusk it was not possible to see him distinctly, but when he made a casual remark and lit a cigarette, I sensed a suggestion of style about him. The fact that his accent was British did not specially interest me; I was attracted by his personality.
