Abstract

A MUSICAL FRIEND once reassured me, when I apologized for talking while a Hadyn symphony was pouring from the radio. ‘Rubbish!’ he said. ‘Haydn and Mozart and all the rest wrote background music—conversation music—that people could chatter to.’
