Abstract

HOW MANY OF US—prickly Scots—have been offended to hear ourselves described as Scotch? Scotch, we inform our imagined denigrators, is an adjective reserved for the description of the products of Scotland—we are Scots. Yet how correct are we in this description? Indeed, some of the classic writers of Scotland would certainly never have hesitated to call themselves Scotch or Scotchmen.
