Abstract

Learned societies, with well defined research objectives, were formed for the organisation and dissemination of Irish scholarship in the 18th century. For the members, the societies provided meeting places for the discussion of research projects, facilities for the publication of papers and a library for their use. The library had a reading room for the consultation of manuscript or printed material and the members were entitled to borrow books.
