The Department, development, and dialectics
Abstract
Many 15‐plus students, instead of staying on at school, opt for further education. Does this mean that the more adult collegiate atmosphere of the CFEs favours the development of so‐called sixth‐form colleges on a CFE base? Or is it merely a displacement phenomenon due to our low school leaving age? If the former, does ‘opting for further education’ mean waiting until the demand for FE places is overwhelming? If the latter, will the CFEs become ‘0’ and ‘A’ level‐based colleges for 16–18 age group, being sixth‐form colleges in all but name?
