Abstract

There are about 40 000 full‐time teachers in Technical Colleges in this country. About 25 000 occupy posts in which they receive additions to salary for professional and academic qualifications. Of this 25 000 rather more than half are trained teachers; for the remainder in‐service training is available at a rate which indicates that some 20 years will pass before they all have a chance of training. Owing to wastage perhaps all of the assistant lecturers and lecturers grade I will be trained by 1985 either pre‐service or in‐service. What about those on consolidated scales? Eighty per cent of principals are trained, but of heads of departments, principal and senior lecturers and lecturers grade II only some 20 per cent have ever had professional training as teachers.
