Abstract

A major step towards the establishment of a fully qualified and trained teaching profession has been announced by Mr Short, Secretary of State for Education and Science. Speaking at Morecambe, he disclosed his decision that students graduating from universities after 1973 will not be accepted as teachers in state schools unless they have satisfactorily completed a course of professional training. The decision will apply to graduates entering primary schools from next autumn. It will not apply to graduates who got their degrees before 1970 or 1973, a point which many of the critics of Mr Short have overlooked.
