Abstract

I handed out the shopping cards to my pupils. ‘Can I have a hard one, Miss?’ ‘I'm going to be the awkward customer, Miss.’ ‘Can I be cashier, Miss?’ They got up from their chairs and converged upon the ‘bank’, collecting money for the purchases, whilst the triumphant cashier practised with the till. In the shop, the class chose their merchandise, prattled like housewives, argued incessantly with the cashier, and checked their change. Later we did some number work. Heads bent earnestly over addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The board was covered with visual aids. When it was time to go home, they took their special work books to finish: ‘See you tomorrow, Miss’.
