Abstract

Romantics and the curious have always sought pastures far from home. This was no great problem for young Englishmen in the golden days of Empire, but now the adventurous must often overcome serious obstacles even in English‐speaking countries. This is particularly true of former colonies, where the natives usually make a point of running their own affairs and even the large international organisations must recruit their labour locally. A typical example is ICI. About one‐third of its employees work outside these islands but barely three in a thousand are long‐term expatriates; the others are local people.
