Abstract

Get half a dozen executives talking together, and it will not be long before the topic of spelling comes up — and in particular how bad the secretarial staff are at it. The title syndrome is not a gismo. A syndrome is, the latest Concise Oxford tells us, a characteristic combination of opinions and/or behaviour. And that is exactly what happens with spelling. It tends to be a fixation, and to produce this characteristic reaction of opinion.
